RECTOR

STEPHEN MORGAN

Stephen Morgan has been Rector of the University of Saint Joseph since 2020. Originally from Wales in the UK, he is an Associate Professor of Theology and Ecclesiastical History.

After a career in finance in the City of London and Hong Kong, he spent fifteen years as the CFO/COO of a large not-for-profit in the UK. Returning to academic work in 2009, he read for a DPhil in Theology at the University of Oxford, where he was a post-doctoral Research Associate of St Benet’s Hall between 2013 and 2015. He has been a member of the academic staff of the Maryvale Institute of Higher Religious Sciences since 2011.

In addition to his duties as Rector of USJ, he is currently supervising or co-supervising six PhD students in Religious Studies, Philosophy and Education. In October 2021, Catholic University of America Press published his “John Henry Newman and the Development of Doctrine”, which has been described as “The best work … on the development of Newman’s own thought on development of doctrine.”

ÁLVARO BARBOSA

Born in Angola in 1970 of Portuguese nationality, Álvaro Barbosa is a Full Professor with an academic and professional background in Engineering, Arts and Computer Science. For over 20 years he worked for international Universities in Europe, North America and Asia, serving as scholar, researcher, and undertaking numerous academic leadership positions as coordinator, dean and vice-rector. He is currently responsible for the areas of internationalisation and academic affairs as vice-rector at the University of Saint Joseph, Macao (USJ),  Macao S.A.R. China.

CATHERINE Q. CASTAÑEDA

Dr. Catherine Q. Castañeda is currently the Vice President for Academic Affairs of the Adamson University in Manila. Relentlessly on her 7th year, she is at the forefront of the university’s efforts at assuring quality through continuous institutional and program accreditation, faculty development, vertical articulation and encouraging new program offerings. She espoused the need for more qualitative research, too. Internationally with the Association of Universities in Asia and the Pacific (AUAP), she proposed parameters to fast track internationalization efforts among the member countries.

MAGDA FERRO

Dr. Magda Ferro holds a degree in International Relations, a Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing, an MBA Diploma, and an MSc degree in Management. Her MSc research addressed the Internationalisation of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) from a management perspective. Over the last decade Mrs.Magda has been working with Internationalization of HEIs, setting up the International Office at Universidade Católica Portuguesa – Porto, where she is the Office Head. Currently, Mrs. Magda manages Universidade Católica Portuguesa – Porto internationalisation strategy and policies, as well as managing the implementation processes. Her main topics of research are the Management of Internationalisation and Internationalisation at Home Processes.

ROCHELLE GE

Professor Rochelle Ge (葛贇) obtained her Ph.D. from National University of Singapore. She was a visiting fellow in Yenching Institute, Harvard University (2013-2014). She works from a cross-disciplinary angle, integrating sociological perspectives into the teaching and research of education and development. NESTLEY I. SORE

Nestley I. Sore is the Director of Adamson University’s Programs and Standards, holding the post since 2018. She was a former department chairperson of the Department of Industrial Engineering (IE), where she also serves as faculty. ASEAN Eng. Sore is also practicing her expertise as a faculty member of Adamson’s Graduate School and was formerly the coordinator of the Master of Engineering programs. In the year 2022, the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and University (PAASCU) recognized her hard work, capabilities, and dedication to her craft thus, the Board of Trustees appointed her as a Commission member of the Commission on Engineering and Architecture Education. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Adamson University and her Master of Science in Industrial Engineering major in Operations Research from the University of the Philippines-Diliman.

ADÉRITO FERNANDES-MARCOS

Born in Mozambique in 1968, graduated in Computer Engineering from the Nova University of Lisbon (1992); holds a PhD summa cum laude in Computer Graphics from the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany (1997); and Habilitation in Tech. and information Systems from the University of Minho (UM), Portugal (2008). TERESA LOONG

Dr. Teresa Loong is the Director of Student and Alumni Affairs at the University of Saint Joseph, Macao. Teresa completed her Doctor of Education specialization in Higher Education Administration at Northeastern University, U.S.A.  She has been committing herself to the development of student affairs and further alumni relations at USJ and in Macao.  Teresa is the founding President of the Macau Student Affairs Association, served as Chairperson from 2020-2022, and is currently vice president of the association and a member of the Diocese Youth Commission. She is an active scholar-practitioner and her areas of research are in student and alumni engagement and mentoring.

GLEN CHATELIER

Serving as Director of International Affairs at Assumption University of Thailand since 2004, Mr. GLEN CHATELIER has lived in Thailand and taught at Assumption University for 34 years. His Holiness Pope Francis re-appointed him as Consultor to the Pontifical Council for Culture for the second term, 2019-2024Mr. Chatelier has been associated with ASEACCU since 1993 and currently serves as Executive Boars member. His former positions at Assumption University include, Special Assistant to the President for International Projects, Faculty Advisor for International Student Projects and the Chair of the Department of Business English, the Faculty of Arts at Assumption University of Thailand. In 2010 he served as Chair on a University Committee which launched the Master of Arts Degree in International Relations at Assumption University.

MARIA CECILIA CUISON

Maria Cecilia A. Tio Cuison is an Assistant Professor of the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management of the University of Santo Tomas, Manila, Philippines handling allied and major Tourism Management courses. She is a Certified Hospitality Educator (2016, CHE) and Certified Guest Service Professional (2016, CGSP) by the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI). With her fruitful almost 35 years in the University of Santo Tomas, she became the Chairperson of the Tourism Department of the College of Education from 1995 till 2006, likewise, the Chairperson of the Hotel and Restaurant Management from the same College from 2004-2006. She also became the Director of the Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Management from 2006-2009. Thereafter, she became the Dean of the College of Tourism & Hospitality Management from 2009 till July of 2019. Currently, she is appointed as the Director for the Office of Student Affairs.

PHON SOPHAL

Phon Sophal is the Director of Saint Paul Institute (SPI) in Cambodia. With a rich background in education, he has dedicated himself to providing superior learning opportunities to students in his community. Sophal was formerly the Director of Saint Justin School from 2011 to 2016, where his visionary leadership led to remarkable growth and success. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Teaching and Technology from the Assumption University of Thailand. He holds a Master’s Degree in Economic and Administration Management from the Royal University of Law and Economics (RULE), a Diploma of Theology from St. Vincent De Paul, Adamson University in the Philippines, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Economic and Rural Development from Cambodia. KAREN TAGULAO

Karen Araño Tagulao is currently a senior lecturer at the Institute of Science and Environment (ISE) of the University of Saint Joseph, Macao. She is a marine biologist with extensive experience in teaching and research expertise on marine flora, including seagrass, seaweeds, and mangroves. She has lead scientific research projects in Macao on the ecology of marine plants with a particular emphasis on algae and mangroves. Her current research is centered on the use of wetlands, specifically mangroves, as nature-based solutions for climate change mitigation and adaptation, water pollution remediation, and more recently, plastic pollution in Macao.In addition to her research, she actively promotes and communicates environmental education to local schools, organizations, industries and the general public.

JOSHUA LASH-BALLEW

Joshua Lash-Ballew works for the University of Saint Joseph, Macao as an International Affairs Regional Manager. As a Macao-American, he holds degrees from George Mason University’s Carter School for Peace and Conflict Studies and has a background in community trust building, workplace mediation, and alternative dispute resolution.
